Christopher G. Fairburn is Wellcome Principal Research Fellow and Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Oxford. He specializes in research on the nature and treatment of eating disorders. His studies have addressed many aspects of eating disorders, including their diagnostic status, epidemiology, aetiology, assessment, course and treatment. He also has a particular interest in the development and evaluation of psychological treatments and is well known for his work developing treatments for eating disorders.  

Professor Fairburn has twice been a Fellow at Stanford's Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and he is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. He was a member of the UK National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) eating disorder guideline development group.

 

Professor Fairburn has held research grants both in Britain and the United States, and he has published extensively in the field. Among his books for professionals are Binge Eating: Nature, Assessment and Treatment (with G.T. Wilson), Eating Disorders and Obesity: A Comprehensive Handbook (with K.D. Brownell), and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Obesity (with Z. Cooper and D. Hawker). He is also author of the well known book Overcoming Binge Eating
