Give the Gift of Life

Nothing kills like this one.

The death rate for eating disorders is high: It ranges between 18% (in 20 year studies) and 20% (in 30 year follow up studies).  In fact the annual death rate associated with anorexia is more than twelve times higher than the annual death rate due to all other causes combined for females between 15 and 24 years old.

Anorexia has the highest rate of death of any psychological / psychiatric illness.

Weight preoccupation and size prejudice can not only lead to a life threatening eating disorder, they also have a huge impact on life itself.  What kind of life is it if you are constantly obsessing about your weight, isolating yourself from family and friends because of this, and limiting your ability to work, learn and play?  What kind of life is it if you are constantly teased or rejected because of your size?

The Eating Disorders Awareness Coalition works to give people back their lives.

Our prevention programs provide the tools for embracing healthy lifestyles, positive body image and self esteem.

EDAC is often the first point of contact for eating disorders early identification and intervention.

Through education, referrals to treatment/resources and providing follow up support, EDAC is the difference between overcoming weight preoccupation, size prejudice and eating disorders versus suffering in silence, severe medical, social and emotional complications and death.

EDAC receives no government or United Way funding.  While primary health care and health promotion services drop eating disorders from their mandate, EDAC continues to work towards filling this void.  Your donation makes all the difference in continuing this important work.

Thank you!
